The 14th

I really don't like Valentines day. Controversial coming from a girl I know but for me it's commercial and I'd much rather give presents and go out for supper because I want to rather than because a day prescribes that I should. The boy knows this- I made it very clear! - so I was amazed when I arrived at his house on Monday evening to a candle lit kitchen, a bottle of Prosecco (I'm allergic to champagne) and a 3 course meal. Wow. I was impressed to say the least!!

It was the least cringey evening and so lovely to just spend some time chilling out. Spinach and feta pastries to start, salmon with a pesto cream, new potatoes and salad for main with wine to match and an amazing cake for dessert. Not all homemade - I probably would have fainted at the shock!! - but delicious all the same.

I contributed with a nice bottle of wine and pain au chocolates for brekkie. Perfect way to spend the 14th!

London Fashion Week #2

London Fashion Week started today and as I'm at uni, degree over taking my life (how is it that students always seem to have less time than when working a full time job; it makes no sense?!) and unable to attend at all, I've been busy reading all of the press surrounding it.

For me, two of the best things that I've seen featured are the #devilpaysnada campaign that is being endorsed by UK Fashion Intern (they're only advertising paid internships throughout fash week - see Twitter!) and the London Fashion Weekend articles on careers in the fashion industry.

I want to go into events or PR post degree. Fashion massively appeals but the amount of unpaid internships that you have to go through to get there is ridiculous so have chosen to focus my attentions on the lifestyle side of things, at least for the time being and until I have a lot more experience/ have had at least one job!!

This article was featured today on the LFWeekend website. Its always interesting to see the career paths that people take (Topshop are very good at it too, see blog post to follow!) and Piers Harrisson's reccomendations will be good for anyone looking to break the industry.

The article was initially featured here and there's a lot more on the website that may be of use!

how to get ahead in fashion part 2

In the second of our two-part feature, we talk to a Fashion Events Producer and a Fashion Photographer about their roles on either side of the catwalk.

Piers Harrisson is a project manager for fashion events company, Bacchus Studio. Piers and his team produce and manage some of the most creative catwalk shows at London Fashion Week and Vodafone London Fashion Weekend.

How?

I took a slightly circuitous route career wise to get to where I am now, but my events background rests largely in catering, across all types of projects. I spent some time working in India, and a good deal of time working as a chef. Food is a big passion of mine so I wanted to learn about it from a professional perspective. I ended up in fashion production after a brief stint in PR. The atmosphere of being on site at an event has always attracted me. The array of different people that you're brought into contact with as a result of being there is the best thing about it.

An average day?

One of the great things about the job is that no two days are the same. It could be anything from doing research for design ideas, to meeting with clients, sponsors, and stylists, working out a technical problem with a supplier, or writing a logistics schedule. Happily, my involvement in Vodafone London Fashion Weekend involves all of the above, so it keeps me on my toes!

London Fashion Week #1 : J. W. Anderson @ Topshop

Opening today, the first day of #LFW, J.W. Anderson has returned for a second time to Topshop with a fabulous new designer collection. The North-Ireland raised, Dalston based designer has revamped his first collection and the new pieces can be deemed an evolution. Flat boyish shoes and motif jumpers feature heavily. The change is that the skirts are patent, as is the leather, and their are unexpected colours at every turn. I'm not a fan of matching skirts and jumpers - it's a little bit 'catwalk' for my tastes but either top or bottom would work amazingly when matched with other statement pieces - a plain tee and a leather would look great given the bold nature of the collection. I'm massively coveting the argyle knits already (in fact I'd like them all in every colour!) and willing my student loan to stretch just a little bit further!!

Topshop interviewed the amazing designer and I couldn't resist sharing!

We grabbed the frenetically busy designer for a few words before the collection launches.

How did you find the reaction from the first collection?
It was really unexpected and really exciting. It was a full commitment and an entire concept, which was amazing. It was sort of like a breaking point for us and it appealed to everyone which was good.

How did it make you feel knowing you had a second one to produce?
It was daunting to think that I had to outdo it. But this one is more stripped back; it’s more about reducing. The idea is about two sisters – two terrible sisters. There’s a lot more of a kink in it. It’s all about perversion and it’s a bit perverse in terms of feel. You know, playing with ugliness and taste levels and the British kink.

Where do the Dodos coming from?
For me they’re strong symbols – the idea of extinction is a powerful one. It’s like a full stop because this is our last collection with Topshop. But it’s also just a playful little doodle – like the kind of thing you come up with when you’re on the phone and doodling at the same time. It’s the same as how the bat came about – it’s subconscious.

How does your design process work from beginning to end?
For me, it’s an evolution process from beginning to end, right up to when we take the pictures. It’s like a collage; you gather all the different elements then you piece them together. We assemble all the different information, process it, sketch it, then hang it on the body, then go in search of new fabrics and new ideas to try and get a different take on things.

How was it working with Kate Phelan?
Kate’s amazing; she’s the sharpest person I know. I love her.

How is it balancing so many projects at once?
You have to take every day as it comes. It’s a lot of pressure but bit by bit, step by step you get there. I’m a workaholic – and it’s starting to show. I don’t really have any time off at the moment until April!

What girls would you like to see wearing this collection?
I think anyone really! A bit of a boyish girl. We have certain people who wear it like Alexa, but I love to see it on anyone at all. You don’t have to be famous, as long as you love it and you believe it, that’s it.

The shoot – what was the vibe behind it?
It was an idea of two characters in a family. Something that felt a little off-kilter and macabre, but young ultimately. It was inspired by a kind of subversive youth culture – the nose chains, the glares, that long never-ending hair cascading down.

Is there a favourite piece?
The argyle. Yes, they look really chic and they’re modern but also fun.

Any tips for young designers?
Never compromise and listen to yourself. And create a good team. Never be concerned about opinion at the time – and don’t be a slave to the internet! There’s a lot more things out there other than the internet!

Gamble Street

Sunday night was a Gamble Street night. A 4 piece alternative rock band from London, Gamble Street are fab (and there's the added bonus that the bassist is the boys housemate and one of my good friends!!).

‘Gamble Street aim to be recognised as a monumental live act, making crowds jump to the beat of their powerful, alternative rock anthems the world over. From the upbeat, festival vibes of ‘Lucy’, to the epic, deeply emotional chords of ‘We’ll Find Our Way’, this is a band to be reckoned with who you’ll certainly be seeing and hearing more of in the very near future.’

They performed at a really cool Brighton venue, Sticky Mikes, and with a fab turnout and a lot of good friends it was an amazing night. There were two warm up acts and then Gamble Street as the headliners, by which point everyone was very happily merry and completely got into the swing of things!! It was an amazing night and Gamble Street are definitely going to go far! Make sure you check them out on YouTube and follow them on Twitter @Gamble_Street.

The Vintage Fair

On Sunday, the Vintage Fair came to town. The Corn Exchange was taken over by stands filled with beautiful vintage furs, exquisite pieces of jewellery, shoes and accessories galore! Despite working at the event I still found time to take a few snaps to show off the wares! The fair travels the country and comes to Brighton 3 or 4 times a year. At only £2 for entry it's well worth a look as prices are very reasonable - the majority of the stands seemed to have a £5 rail. What better way to spend a rainy Sunday than hunting out some gorgeous and unusual vintage pieces!

Instagram catchup

This week has been a busy one: a dinner party with good friends, baking incredible fairy cakes (vanilla cream cheese icing with chocolate and ginger nut pieces - serious yum!), prepping for the launch of Promenade magazine and the launch party on Thursday evening, lots of chilled snugly movie nights with the boy, some pottering in the lanes and some work for the Vintage Fair. I though an Instagram catch up was the best way to share it all!

The aftermath of fairy cakes and dinner!

My gorgeous niece, Ona; she really is the chubbiest little beauty!

The fash soc girls posing ready for the launch party <3

Nat, the amazing lead singer from Gamble Street (blog post to follow!) who performed an incredible set at the Promenade launch party.

Issue #3 of Promenade - its fab, read it!

Lazy, hangover days. Some of the best moments are spent with friends still suffering from the night before at 10pm!!

Amazing finds in the South Lanes. I head to Rome in a month and these are incredible little snapshots, one of those things that I was just 'meant' to find.

Another one of the things I was 'meant' to find. Brighton really does have everything!

Jo Malone window display made me smile when I was pottering today :)

Promenade

In 2011, Fashion Soc was created at Sussex Uni and I was lucky enough to be handed the presidency of the society last September. Fashion Soc aims to provide a platform for all things fashion (& lifestyle, arts/culture etc so basically me down to the ground!) through a number of avenues and one of the focuses is Promenade magazine.  A bi-annual online publication, the magazine is written, produced and designed entirely by students and really does get better with each issue - not that I'm bias or anything!

The magazine is run by a fab team of editors and to celebrate all of their hard work and dedication we like to host a party upon the launch of each new issue. The next is on Thursday evening and I'm far too excited! Taking place at one of Brighton's best kept and newest secrets, Funfair Club, the party will showcase the mag with a bang, with goody bags for guests,  a live band, make up artists, hair stylists and a ball pit in the middle of the club to top it all off, not forgetting the bed of nails of course!!

In anticipation of the launch, we've released a few of the shots from the focus editorial, a piece on 'clashing'. They epitomise the trend of mixing and mashing colours, prints and fabrics and are both innovative and imaginative, with the chosen shots being a great central focus for the magazine. I've got a few samples to share, all photo credits to the incredible stylists (Charlotte Harding, Ruby Stone-Sharp & Kate Eringer).

You can check out the new issue here on Thursday: http://www.issuu.co.uk/promenademagazine

And if you're in the Brighton area then the launch party is free entry if you guestlist in advance.
